Elaionas Project 2018
Video performance / Elaionas, Athens / 2018

This video-performance is a documentation of my walking journey through the streets of Elaionas, a neighborhood that consists of rag-pickers and street vendors in a multicultural environment. It’s a low-income, industrial area in the fringes of central Athens that faces threats of becoming a shopping mall. At the same time, this is the area of the refuges hotspot of Elaionas, one of the biggest structures in Attica. This Athenian neighborhood has every Sunday morning a big flea market organized by vendors.
I tried to blend in and become a vendor myself for a day. I constructed a trailer with upcycled materials, placed a radio on top of it, and carried it around with me. I wasn’t selling goods using currency but offering music to the shoppers and vendors that crossed my way. The starting point of the walking journey was the metro station and after circling the main area of the open market, I ended up where I started.
My shoes are the protagonist of this action that tries to guide the spectator through the political and social context of a poor but thriving area that faces many dangers.
